The painter Robert Šalanda, a graduate of the Jiří Sopek studio at the Academy of Fine Arts, Prague, returned to the hung painting after a period of expressive figurative painting, a period of pictorial and drawn citations and an excursion into three dimensions (fold-out books). In the hung picture he has appraised all of his experience up till now from non-painterly activities. After a time he approached the picture with different ideas of what a painting should look like and what it should communicate. It was necessary to take a step outside the medium of painting in order to return to it, this time with new curiosity and without fatigue, equipped with a clear concept. The advantage Robert Šalanda has is that his “found concept” rests on solid painterly foundations, and thus acquires individuality and heft.

A certain conceptual constriction characterises Šalanda’s current work, the comeback of which can be traced back to 2003. In terms of contents the work is naturally integrated, while in terms of form the individual links of the chain remain freely open. “I lay emphasis on work with symbols, their significance, on apparent banality and the combination of these positions (R. Š.).”
