About artist

In her work Kateřina Šedá focuses on socially conceived actions in which there are used dozens or even hundreds of individuals that don't have anything to do with art. The actions take place in a completely non-artistic environment. One of the objectives of these experiments with inter-personal relations is to guide those taking part out of experienced stereotypes or social isolation. The nature of her projects is either very personal (e.g. the It Doesn’t Matter project) or of a local character (There’s Nothing There) - Šedá works with the residents of small villages, the names of which we hear for the first time. Despite this personal aspect, Šeda's work is easy to comprehend both generally and even internationally - Šedá has achieved international recognition in a short period of time (she now has more exhibitions abroad than in the Czech Republic).

Šedá draws the “material" for her projects from the ranks of those close to her - from her family or from her home town in Líšeň near Brno or its surroundings. The Transmitter project, which was the artist’s graduation thesis, is linked to her family. Šedá made her family members into members of a commission at the Academy of Fine Arts. The job of this commission was to assess the work of some of the academy's students. The commission was first confronted with the works without the student’s participation, and then heard the student’s interpretation. Šedá drew attention to the confrontation of opinions of people not involved in art and the world of art that is often closed within itself and incomprehensible without the artists’ explanation. Another project entitled It Doesn’t Matter involves the artist's grandmother. Šedá attempted to provoke her grandmother, who had fallen into a lethargic stupor and had lost her zest for life. Her grandmother had worked for years in a hardware store and knew all the products by heart. Šedá convinced her grandmother to begin to draw all the tools. This resulted in a catalogue of 650 drawn items and prices. Šedá’s grandmother even came to the opening in Prague, and Kateřina Šedá won for this project the prestigious Jindřich Chalupecký Award.

Work with the townspeople involved the collective projects, Exhibition in the Window, There's Nothing There, Around and Around and The Spirit of Uhyst. Some 150 residents of Líšeň took part in the Exhibition in the Window action in which they exhibited various objects in the windows of their homes. The There’s Nothing There project was conceived for the village of Ponětovice. After a survey of the village and the activities of the individuals living there, Šedá managed to unite all the villagers: On a single day they all took part in activities according to a predetermined schedule. At the same time they all got up, went shopping, swept their walkways, cooked tomato sauce and rice, rode their bikes around town and went for a beer. The project Around and Around, presented in 2008 at the Berlin Biennial, was made in her native town of Líšeň. One day the artist realized how strongly people try to isolate themselves with high fences that nobody can see through and to enclose themselves with their own privacy. Šedá then spent half a year convincing neighbours of one street to take part in the project. On one designated day Šedá herself climbed over all the fences (with the participation of all her invited neighbours observing her). She then constructed a round structure from different materials exactly according to the Líšeň models. This was exhibited at the international exhibition in Berlin to where her Líšeň neighbours were bussed to climb over the fence using various aids and into the circle and out again. The inter-personal barriers were at least symbolically conquered.

In 2009 the Spirit of Uhyst project was undertaken based on the artist's work with the residents of the town of Uhyst, Germany. The locals were given the task of drawing with a single line their view of the "spirit" of the village. All the lines were gradually made on a single line of paper. A collective drawing was made signed by all 316 participants.
