Marek Meduna (born 1974) is a distinct artist in the Central European context. He works as an independent artist, but he is also a member of the artist group Rafani. Marek Meduna’s work often deals with the essence of art media, and similarly, it demonstrates the complexity of human understanding and regulations. Given facts pose a challenge for Meduna to inquire about their violation. He subsequently reveals these deviations in his work as an interconnection of the representation, shapes and placement thereof. His work often includes sculpture, installations and it is place-specific, where we also find texts and paintings. The result that the viewers see at an exhibition of this artist, usually has only partial direction of meaning. In addition to the instructions in the legend to the works and titles of exhibits, the understanding of the concept spawns primarily from the viewer’s interpretation of the metaphoric core of the connections (spatial, object, language, etc.), that Meduna creates. Sometimes the artist sets a new code for certain things using a strict logical path (i.e. the exhibition Program, Gallery Jelení, 2007), the essence of his work, however, is sensual and intuitive. Meduna’s experiences and feelings imprinted in his work, as if reflect a clash of the subject with a certain dysfunction – with an unexpected feeling of indecisiveness or determines. The artist creates parallels of experiences; he compiles an image and a language. The synthetic figure as his final work, therefore, often consists of many mutually engaged, retrospectively undecipherable layers.
He oriented some his exhibitions directly at making a theme of the institution of art and its media (Saturday, Gallery ETC, 2005; Indication, 2006; Blind Men Re-measuring an Elephant, Gallery C2C, 2006; River, Gallery of the City of Blansko, 2008; Head, Karlin Studios, 2009; or Equilateral Triangle, Meetfactory, 2009), others related more to language and speech (Content, Gallery AM180, 2005; We Did Not Agree on the Title, Gallery NoD, 2007; Version, Gallery Louvre, 2007). A special sub-theme is his shift of the legends to the inner structure of the art message, such as at the exhibition of Jan Šerých (Yes, Old Town City Hall GHMP, 2009) or at the collective exhibition Věcné stavy (Material States) (Karlin Studios, 2006). Meduna also works with the entire gallery as a meaningful object (Improved Model, Limping Effect, Gallery NoD, 2007; Helpless Father and Century of the Woman, Atrium, Moravian Gallery, 2008; After the Velvet, House at the Golden Ring, GHMP, 2009).
