Magdalena Juříková

Juříková is an art historian, curator and critic. Her professional interest is in Czech art of the 20th century and contemporary art, especially sculpture and statuary.

She studied art history at the Faculty of Arts of Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Brno (1975–1981), after which she worked as specialist assistant at the Collection of Modern Sculpture at the National Gallery in Prague until 1986.

After maternity leave she returned to the National Gallery as director of the sculpture collection in the department of modern and contemporary art, working here until 1996. During this time she curated the exhibition Karel Nepraš: Drawings, Prints, Illustration, Animated Humour and Small Sculptures (1991, the Small Gallery of the Modern Sculpture Collection in Zbraslav).

In 1993 she was curator of the Czech pavilion at the Venice Biennale (František Skála) and in 1995 she curated an exhibition of the work of Tony Cragg at the Waldstein Riding School (1995).
She curated many exhibitions of the work of the sculptor Pavel Opočenský: Zasvěcení hmotou (the House of Arts, Brno 1996, and Galerie Nová síň, Prague 1997) and Hmota díry (Výstavní síň Sokolská 26, Ostrava 1996).
She organised a joint exhibition of the work of Markus Döhne and Josef Schnobl for the Václav Špála Gallery entitled Todsicher (1997).

In 1996–1997 Juříková was consultant and secretary for the acquisition of artworks within the growing collection of Komerční banka. She mainly bought works by the young generation, thus lending support to the art market.

After a break of several months working as art consultant for Ranný Architect (1998) she returned briefly to a directorial post at the Sculpture Collection at the National Gallery.

From 1999 to 2012 she was director of the Golden Goose Gallery Trust. This valuable private collection belonging to Vladimír Železný is one of the largest publicly accessible collections of contemporary art and contains around 1,700 works. Juříková prepared her presentation over several exhibitions: Šedesátá / The Sixties – from the collection of the Golden Goose Gallery in the Brno House of Art (2004), Fantomy a atomy: České umění 1938–58 / Phantoms and Atoms: Czech Art 1938–58 from the collection of the Golden Goose Gallery (House at the Golden Ring, Prague 2007) and Šedesátá – kolekce obrazů z let 1959–1972 / The Sixties – a Collection of Pictures from 1959–1972from the Vladimír Železný Collection (Chodovská tvrz, Prague 2007–2008).

At present she is director of City Gallery Prague, a position she took up in 2012.

In 2015 she produced the exhibition Brno Art Open – Sculptures in the Street, which examined the relationship between building and dwelling, sculpture and architecture, and their mutual interaction.

She has also curated several art symposia: unofficial symposia in the marl quarry in Přední Kopanina (1981–88), the restored International Symposia in Hořice (1989), and the sculptural symposia Stones and Stars in the grounds of the Ondřejov observatory (2000–2002).

She is co-founder of the project Hapestetika, an association that brings together specialists and the lay public in an effort to make art accessible to the visually handicapped, especially by means of exhibitions of tactile art and consultation and educational activities for museums, galleries and art schools during work with handicapped people.

Juříková regular publishes articles and reviews, for instance in Ateliér, Lidové noviny, Kameni and others, and is currently involved in a collaboration with Art & Antiques and Revolver Revue.
