Rostislav Koryčánek

Though we are surrounded by architecture, we cannot state with certainty that we are completely able to reflect upon its context and understand its limits, possibilities, relationships and objectives. In the eyes of many its perception and evaluation are simply a question of its utilitarian values and the financial expenses incurred on its realisation. Far less often do we encounter debates about the broader context within which it appears and within which it should be appreciated. Architecture creates meaning and value. It creates complexes, establishes relationships, participates in the delineation of social ties, helps increase the quality of life... architecture plays a fundamental role in the creation of public space. 

Architecture, urbanism and public space are pivotal themes in the research activities and popularising efforts of Rostislav Koryčánek. In his books and essays and his participation in the creation and activities of the magazine Era 21, which presents “architecture in its social, cultural, economic and political context”, he reflects upon the public space in a far broader way than one might expect given the magazine’s close links with the Brno authorities. More importantly, Rostislav Koryčánek is not simply a passive observer, but actively participates in the transformation and cultivation of public space. He has organised and introduced many roundtables and seminars on architecture and related themes. One of these, “The Station is in the Centre”, examined the thorny topic of the urban planning of the City of Brno and possible fundamental transformations related to the relocation of its central railway station. While working as director of the House of Arts in Brno (2007–2012), he organised many tours of sculptures in the city centre under the umbrella title Sculptures in Streets, which were intended to be a practical illustration of the opinions formulated in the article “The Boundaries of Urbanism” for the magazine Host, in which he states, among other things: “Satirically intended events, like interventions in the public space with an artistic intention, shift the boundary of the expectable and motivate us to expand the register of urban expression.”

He was also the initiator and leading figure in the project Brno Architectural Paths / Brno Architectural Manual, which aims to provide information to visitors by means of a freely accessible internet database and printed maps showing several circular walks that familiarise visitors to architecture designed between 1918 and 1945. The manual aims to present architecture in its temporal and historical context and cultivate a sense of meaning and symbol. As Koryčánek says, the symbolic and relational content is so strong that not even the seizure of public space and its transformation into shopping centres can see Brno city centre diminished in terms of importance and meaning (see “The Boundaries of Urbanism”). 

Rostislav Koryčánek has made a significant contribution to the popularisation of other areas of art. As director of the House of Art, in the face of a squeezed budget and conflicts with the founders, he repeatedly organised not only the festival Sculptures in the Streets, but also many exhibitions that attracted considerable attention. Notable amongst these were the projects Formats of Transformation (2009), Signals from the Unknown (2012) documenting the development of the Czech comics scene, and the presentation of the photography of Joel-Peter Witkin (2010), part of the project Decadence Now.

With Koryčánek at the helm, the House of Art underwent refurbishment and acquired a new logo designed by Robert Jansa and Petr Bosák. This logo is a kind of symbolic expression of Koryčánek’s view of how to work with individual spheres of art. It is unusual, impermanent and variable, and yet it retains the one property that a logo must have, i.e. it indicates clearly the institution to which it relates. Just as the logo changes in terms of colour and shape, so too, in a fashion some find controversial and provocative, does Koryčánek’s ability to view and present the objects of his interest change in such a way as to prevent the calcification of our ways of perceiving these phenomena. These phenomena, which every inhabitant, visitor, tourist, architect, urban planner and local politician have before them, are paid insufficient attention precisely because we are used to looking at them in tired, acquired ways.

For Koryčánek the city is not simply the sum of its buildings, squares and streets, but above all a complex symbolic structure that communicates much about what is, what is not and what could be living public space. Koryčánek remains faithful to his natural element even at his current workplace, the Moravian Gallery in Brno, where he is head of CENS, the Methodological Centre of New Strategies of Museum Presentation.
