Galerie UM

UM Gallery, previously known as VŠUP Gallery is the oldest of the three exhibition spaces run by the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague. It was founded in 2000 and since the following year, it has regularly housed selected exhibition projects. Unlike the sister galleries 207 Gallery and NIKA Gallery founded as a grassroots initiative with emancipatory potential for a narrow target group, the UM Gallery focuses more towards the “outside” – towards visitors who are not necessarily part of the academia and the discourse. The exhibition space, located on the ground floor of the school next to the main entrance, has the ambition to aim for a wide scope of interdisciplinary education at the Academy of the ... and thus substantially fulfilling its representative function.

Until 2013, this space operated under the name VŠUP Gallery. The renaming of the UM Gallery took place as part of the transformation of the logo and corporate design of the University of Arts, Architecture and Design, along with the introduction of a new acronym for the entire art institution (UMPRUM). This step was justified by the then rector Jindřich Smetana with reference to the illegibility of the original "VŠUP", but also by the institution’s history associated with the “UMPRUM” abbreviation as an established and frequently used term (Johanka Lomová: VŠUP vs. UMPRUM, https://www.artantiques.cz/vsup-vs-umprum, accessed 30 July 2021).

The gallery's exhibition programme, featuring about ten exhibitions per year, together with the accompanying programme, revolves around the results of a competition, which is open to projects by students, lecturers and graduates of the Academy of the Arts, Design and Architecture, as well as external artists. The gallery’s programme is composed by an exhibition committee consisting of representatives of the Academy and, according to the official statement, emphasizes “the presentation of creative activity that guarantees an adequate balance between free art, design, intermedia and architecture”. (Galerie UM, https://www.umprum.cz/web/cs/galerie-um, accessed 30 July 2021) The school offers production and partial financial support, but external exhibitors are charged a fee for renting the exhibition space. The exhibition conditions are therefore to some extent exclusive and the public competition can be seen as primarily open to the inside. In addition to exhibition projects, the gallery has also been used in the past to present thesis and diploma works of the school’s students.

According to the aforementioned intention to present a cross-section of the multimedia creative activity of VŠUP, the UM Gallery offers its exhibitors a free hand in designing exhibition projects, thus broadening the range of the presented topics. In addition to presenting contemporary art created directly on the floors above the gallery (e.g. A1.zip, 2019; Don’t Panic!, 2019) it also focuses on retrospective and historical exhibitions (such as  Jaroslav Benda 1882–1970, 2017; Čau Zajíc – TYPO 9010, 2016; Z Prahy až do Buenos Aires, 2014) that deal primarily with design and architecture. What is the common thread of these projects is always the Academy itself.

An example is the 2019 exhibition Kdo, když ne kdy. Okupační stávka na VŠUP v roce 1989 by curators of Klára Peloušková and Vojtěch Märc. It focused on the occupation strike that took place shortly after 17 November 1989 at the University of Arts, Architecture and Design. The curators and graduates of the Theory studies at the aforementioned school processed textual, visual and audiovisual archival documents and enabled visitors to realize and reassess the degree of current academic engagement through the prism of a historical event. The installation itself combined period materials such as posters, banners, leaflets and photographs, with video and film. Especially the audiovisual component of the exhibition served as a welcome relief from the often text-laden exhibitions dealing with historical events. As in many other exhibitions, the limited space of the gallery was divided with chipboard panels and tables that structured the room and divided it into several imaginary parts.

A more ambitious exhibition called Síla i budoucnost jest národu národnost. Architektura a česká politika v 19. století by architecture historian and current Rector of the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design, Jindřich Vybíral, employed a similar, yet more radical architectural design of the space. The exhibition, which opened at the end of 2020, is to be the first output of the research project Architektura a politika, in which a team of experts from the Department of Theory and History of Art is participating and which is also funded by the Ministry of Culture. The space of the gallery, conceived as an architectural studio, was divided by both the partitions and reproductions of two ceremonial arches thematically referring to the content of the exhibition.

The architectural treatment of the gallery space, the former studio of Josef Wagner, thus becomes an interesting element and task of all exhibitions. In this white cube model, there is a small bookstore of the UMPRUM Publishing House located at the entrance, which is significantly prominent in the space – the limited exhibition area encourages bolder interventions and emphasizes the variability of projects.

Můj baťovský domek

Kurátorka výstavy: Jitka Ressová

Anotace: Cílem výstavy, která prezentuje současné úpravy baťovského bydlení ve Zlíně, je konfrontovat někdejší záměry tvůrců s novými požadavky a představami současných obyvatel. Představeny jsou vybrané zdařilé a zajímavé rekonstrukce různých typů baťovských domků. Atmosféru vnitřní atmosféry bydlení a obraz ze života v domě dokreslují fotografie Libora Stavjaníka. Pozice

Autoři výstavy: Evžen Šimera a Tereza Fišerová

Anotace: Jaké pozice může divák na výstavě zaujmout a v jakých se nacházejí vystavené objekty? Metody, specificky vlastní Tereze Fišerové a Evženu Šimerovi, zůstávají rozeznatelné, jejich autorství však již zdaleka není jednoznačné. Docházejí tak k definování různých pozic v obecných možnostech výstavy. Výsledkem je soubor objektů, jejichž (ne)využití člověk může a nemusí odhalit. Pozice díla se stane nejasná, pozice diváka nejistá.

Věci a slova: umělecký průmysl, užité umění a design (1870 – 1970)

Autorky výstavy: Lada Hubatová-Vacková, Martina Pachmanová, Pavla Pečinková

Anotace: Umělecký průmysl, užité umění a design zaznamenaly v průběhu let 1870-1970 výraznou proměnu nejen v rovině formálního stylu, ale i v rovině společenských priorit. Pro umělecký průmysl konce 19. století je charakteristický vyšívaný dekorativní vějíř, pro užité umění modernismu efektivně uspořádaná kuchyně, pro poválečný design funkční televize. Vybrané historické předměty jsou doplněny o autentický dobový komentář teoretiků a kritiků oboru (Eitelberger, Hostinský, Šalda, Tyršová, Vaněk, Loos, Markalous, Teige, Brouk, Kotík, Šindelář, Lamarová, a mnozí další). K výstavě vychází obsáhlá antologie textů.

Z Prahy až na konec světa: výstavy „ženského umění“ a mezinárodní reprezentace meziválečného Československa

Kurátorka výstavy: Martina Pachmanová

Anotace: Výstava mapuje různé aspekty „ženského umění“ na meziválečné české výtvarné scéně, a to především skrze jeho úlohu v mezinárodní reprezentaci. Její hlavní součástí je dílčí rekonstrukce jedné z „vývozních“ expozic, jež se s posvěcením státních orgánů mezi válkami realizovala v roce 1929 v Argentině pod kuratelou Ženské národní rady a Kruhu výtvarných umělkyň. K výstavě vychází katalog.

Resort

Autor výstavy: Martin Hrubý

Anotace: Výstavní projekt je vyústěním diplomové práce Martina Hrubého, kterou autor realizoval v ateliéru Intermediální konfrontace u Jiřího Davida na UMPRUM. Hlavní částí projektu je film o spletité historii bývalého letního resortu ÚV KSČ ve Vystrkově u Orlické přehrady.

UM kola

Autoři výstavy: Adam Šimeček, Kristýna Zámečníková

Anotace: Výstava představí různé typy kol, které navrhli absolventi a studenti UMPRUM, jako je např. Ondřej Tobola, Jerry Koza, Michal Malášek, Mikuláš Novotný, skupina OKOLO (Adam Štěch, Matěj Činčera, Jan Kloss), Adam Šimeček a další. Na výstavě jsou předvedeny ukázky spolupráce mezi designéry a firmami, specializujících se na výrobu jízdních kol.

Cizí dům? Architektura českých Němců 1848 - 1891

Kurátorka výstavy: Věra Laštovičková

Anotace: Cílem výstavy je ukázat vazby mezi českou a německou architekturou v období, kdy se oba zemské národy teprve začínají proti sobě vymezovat a hledat svou vlastní kolektivní identitu. Prezentována je nejen tvorba česko-německých architektů, ale také architektura měst v někdejší německé jazykové oblasti. Pozornost se soustředí rovněž na ty stavby, které hrály v utváření národního uvědomění českých Němců rozhodující roli: spolkové německé domy, německá divadla, turnerské tělocvičny, radnice německých měst nebo luteránské kostely. K výstavě vyšel katalog.

Pavel Štecha: Chataři

Kurátorka výstavy: Hana Buddeus

Anotace: Výstava představí málo známé a přitom jedinečné dokumentární fotografie bývalého pedagoga UMPRUM Pavla Štechy (1944-2004). Výstava se koná v rámci 5. ročníku konání Festivalu Fotograf v říjnu 2015.

Tam a zpátky. Současný design, architektura a urbanismus v ČR

Anotace: Výstava prezentuje případy tematizace času a současnosti v díle mladých českých designérů a architektů. Zároveň však chce též kriticky otevřít současný pohled na otázky lokální české identity v umění na pozadí globálního multikulturalismu. K výstavě vychází katalog.
