iron construction, wool, 170 x 320 x 110 cm
This monumental structure created for the Venice Biennale in 1993 takes the form of a, tunnel-like structure made of iron and covered in red wool. Inside is an object very reminiscent of a gynaecological table.
“In the case of I Do Not Expect To Change I drew on the experience of my mother, who underwent a state of clinical death in which individuals genuinely feel they are passing through a tunnel. This experience was so powerful that I simply had to work with it. I added another level, which is represented by the gynaecological table, so that now we have both death and birth. However, the viewer is free to interpret the installation as they wish and in ways I would never have foreseen.” (MD)
