The landscape and environment within which the artist sets his dramatic figure compositions also plays a role. He draws his motifs mainly from the surroundings of Bukov\u00e1 hora in the Bohemian Central Mountains, a locale with its own social and natural features, where he has lived for over twenty years. His works displayed at the exhibition \u201cPoh\u0159\u00ed\u017een do sv\u00e9ho bl\u00edzk\u00e9ho okol\u00ed\u201c (Entrenched in His Immediate Surroundings) (Galerie Klatovy \/ Klenov\u00e1, 2019) make this clear. In his paintings the mountainous and, at first glance, bleak area is somehow static, suspended in time, in contrast to the liveliness of the characters and story. Moreover, unlike the fairly grotesque depiction of the characters, the landscape is rendered almost realistically. This approach introduces a note of tension into Kuri\u0161\u2019s works and leads to surrealist tendencies. In contrast to the earthy colours of the landscape, he uses unusually rich, almost flashy, colours emphasising the individuality contained in the image. His brilliant work with light in the exterior and interior then contributes to the drama of the scene depicted. The placement of the characters, the colour scheme, and above all the lighting are often reminiscent of theatre set design.\r\nWhat transcends even as it connects the scenes depicted in individual canvases is the story. This tends to be the first impulse behind a painting, or is developed across several works. Narrative can be followed in the repeated depiction of the main character, who appears in different situations in the cycle. We might divide the individual themes into three domains: the quotidian; the world of children; and mythology and fairytales. However, these three motifs are often interwoven within the framework of a cycle or story.\r\n<i>Modr\u00e1k<\/i> is a cycle in which the artist focuses on the child\u2019s world. Although supernatural, unrealistic figures and phenomena are still present in the individual scenes, they occur in situations that the artist draws on from everyday life. The viewer is thus privy to scenes that she probably knows from her own experience or surroundings (e.g. summer holidays on water, feeding hens, market towns, or television in the evening). Of course, we associated happy moments, games and children\u2019s togetherness with the world of children. However, Martin Kuri\u0161 is a seasoned observer and in his hands we see that childhood is not merely idyllic, but also contains everyday and even traumatic moments. In the cycle <i>Lola<\/i>&nbsp;he follows visually (and in his artist\u2019s book also verbally) the story of an adolescent girl who, having run away from home, does not experience the freedom she so yearns for, but suffering (a kidnapping, a stay in a \u201ccamp\u201d, saving lives during floods, burial). In the cycle <i>D\u011bti a&nbsp;nejist\u00e1 idyla \/ Children and an Uncertain Idyll<\/i>&nbsp;Kuri\u0161 focuses on the social and geographic historical traces of Sudeten history, mainly through depicting children and teenagers and the events associated with them.\r\nIn addition to the general, everyday themes associated with life in the region of the Bohemian Central Mountains, Kuri\u0161\u2019s work is characterised by an overlap with and an interest in mythology. A good example would be the cycle <i>Navarana<\/i>, in which the main character, despite various mishaps, encounters a group of people from a fabled Nordic country living in harmony with nature. The artist creates other characters and plotlines that do not fit into the common Central European perception of mythology. Nevertheless, the need for community and family life is emphasised, as in his other cycles. Individual scenes may have an almost symbolic effect, e.g. the breast-feeding Navarana (albeit with the attributes of Nordic indigenous peoples).\r\nKuri\u0161e\u2019s skill in narrative and storytelling is manifest in other forms, e.g. artist\u2019s books in which he complements the visual story verbally, or in puppet plays, which he first began work on in 2006. The experience in woodcarving he acquired while working on puppet theatre is also employed in the creation of sculptures and large statues. Unlike his bespoke, civil puppets, these tend to be more symbolic (<i>Madona<\/i>,&nbsp;<i>Cesta do Betl\u00e9ma \/ The Road to Bethlehem<\/i>). Kuri\u0161\u2019s paintings, wooden figure sculptures and puppets refer to folk, even naive, works in terms of form and content.
