Velíková has long had an interest in the possibility of communicating human experience. She works with her own personal testimonies and those of others (e.g. Zpovědnice / Confessional, 2008, Domino, 2009, Špatně položená otázka / Poorly Phrased Question, 2013). However, the question of whether the individual’s experience can be shared with others is often subject to doubt or remains problematic.
The individuals providing testimony are usually left alone with their message within the visual space of the video. Sometimes the audio is desynchronised from the visual. The outcome is that Velíková’s work is not so much interested in sharing an experience with the viewer as formally examining the impenetrable barriers between individual and personal experience in human society. The ideal medium for this job and the predominant medium in her oeuvre is video. Her work is characterised by a precise visuality often linked with a verbal dimension. Another important feature is work with retrospective views of the artist’s childhood, both from the perspective of seeking to define her own identity (e.g. the installation Každý mě má rád / Everyone Likes Me, 2007), and in relation to the creative process (the audio-installation Rodinná umělkyně / Family Artist, 2006).
Another aspect of her art might be called video sculptures in which direct work with the body’s relationship to its surroundings or its link with specific objects is examined. However, this still involves a certain form of communication, albeit between the body and the intimate objective surroundings (e.g. I step where I belong, 2012). Velíková is a graduate of the Jiří David studio at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague (VŠUP), after which she took a doctorate at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague (AVU). She is also a gallerist and curator. Along with Tereza Severová she founded the Entrance Gallery in Prague in 2005.
