Milan Kohout likes to capture attention through his very well thought out strategies on the boarder of art, performance and social probe of the given issue. His typical almost assertive way of communication is important for opening topics that touch general questions on politics, terrorism, commerce and the church. His work is intensely based on the Czech underground, which has created the so-called second culture defined by Ivan Jirous (called Magor [Madman]). From here Milan Kohout, who graduated from Electro-technical Engineering at the University of West Bohemia in Plzen during the 1970s, took the most fundamental aspect, which is unlimited freedom in artistic work, inclination to leftist philosophical values, independence on the establishment of financial dictate on art, not suppressing his own thoughts, cooperation and permanent socialization. This formed him also at the time when he was exiled from Czechoslovakia for his political and cultural activities. He spent two years in Austria in a refugee camp where he continued in his art work and then moved to Boston, USA, where he settled down. Here he supplemented his art education during the years 1989-1993 at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts with a major in video, film and performance, and at The New England Institute of Art in Boston where he completed his pedagogic minimum. This is where he started his pedagogical-artistic activity with a specialization in performance and political art at TUFTS University and Massachusetts College of Art in Boston. Since 1994 he has been a member of the international group Mobius. He presents himself in a number of performance festivals around the world (USA, Canada, European Union, China, Cuba, Thailand, and others).
In his work he most often uses the medium of performance, which enables him to engage into the situation that shows the boarders of artistic freedom and personal opinion on the given topic. This is most often criticism of market capitalism and ideologies of different churches. He refers to his art as partisan. He expresses himself absolutely freely and independently and he does not take into consideration social rules and norms. His medium of expression, besides himself, is the power of language in the spirit of Noam Chomsky. He perceives language as something that man thinks with, makes the world and interprets it. That is why his situational posters, on which dominate texts and photographs, point out the emptying of words, which capitalism has led to in the advertising industry under the great manipulativeness of future customers. Milan Kohout perceives art – performance as an inseparable part of his life; his artistic tool is his own body in the same way brushes and colours are for painters. That is how he can express his attitude towards the world, which is founded on basic ethical questions. He uses his engaged art position against market dictatorship and political or religious ideologies.
